Matrosengrill is a beloved takeout spot nestled along Am Leystapel in the vibrant heart of Cologne. Famous for serving up classic German street food with a fresh and flavorful twist, this small yet lively kiosk has quickly become a favorite among locals and visitors alike. If you find yourself wandering near the Chocolate Museum or the bustling beer garden nearby, Matrosengrill offers the perfect culinary pit stop to fuel your adventures.
The real stars here are the beautifully char-grilled sausages served in soft, freshly baked buns that hold just the right amount of tenderness and warmth. These sausages are expertly cooked to a light char, locking in juicy, savory flavors that are both comforting and exciting to the palate. Equally enticing are the loaded French fries — crispy, golden, and perfectly seasoned, often paired with their renowned curry sauce that adds a vibrant kick to every bite. Customers frequently recommend the classic currywurst, a quintessential Cologne treat that Matrosengrill nails with its balanced spices and perfectly cooked sausage.
The atmosphere around Matrosengrill is informal and inviting, with friendly staff – famously twin brothers – whose great sense of humor and warmth create a welcoming environment that feels like catching up with old friends. Although the eatery doesn’t offer much seating inside, there are plenty of tables around where you can stand and enjoy your meal, or better yet, take your food to the adjacent beer garden. Imagine savoring a freshly grilled sausage with a cold pint of beer while soaking up the lively Cologne riverside vibe—pure street food bliss.
Despite its popularity, any queue here moves quickly, a testament to the efficient service and well-loved food. The prices are reasonable, especially considering the prime location and quality, making it an accessible indulgence whether you're on a quick lunch break or simply meandering through the city. From the simple yet addictive loaded fries with curry sauce, to the expertly grilled sausages and soft buns, every bite reflects Matrosengrill's commitment to satisfying cravings with straightforward, delicious street food done right.
In summation, Matrosengrill is much more than a quick eatery; it’s a genuine taste of Cologne’s street food culture, wrapped in warm hospitality and dependable quality. For anyone exploring the city, this is a must-visit spot to enjoy authentic German flavors in a lively, friendly setting.

If you find yourself in Cologne, you definitely have to try the currywurst and fries from Matrosen grill. The food is freshly prepared and is always perfectly seasoned. There’s always queues, however the line goes very quick. The loaded fries are all good and so are the sausages. A perfect street snack for your stroll through Cologne.

Staff here (and his "twin brother") are absolute stars! Great sense of humour and super friendly! Food was simple but tasted amazing. Recommend the chips and curry sauce! Although the sausage in a bun was also incredible. Bread was so soft and fresh and the sausage lightly charred and cooked to perfection. With an added benefit you could take your food to the beer garden next door and have a pint with it just made such a lovely lunch! Could not recommend enough!

I was staying at a hotel near by and walked past here several times! Its a really lovely place where they have lots of tables you can stand around and eat or sit/walk by the river! It's right by the Chocolate museum so very busy at times. I had been walking all day so needed something to keep me going. The large chips with mayo were just the ticket. It cost €4.50 or €5.20 with a sauce. Pretty reasonable seeing as it's in such a great location.
